For a while, I have been hankering to do some of my own design work. I studied design for performance and have completed an interior design diploma, so when a friend of mine asked me if I could come up with a concept design for their house in Somerset I jumped at the chance. It’s currently being used as a holiday let, but it needs a good tidy up, bit of refurbishment and a refresh. It’s not something that is going to happen right away as funds are tight and the leaky roof is currently top priority but we both enjoyed working out what these two receptions rooms would look like and how this will set the tone for the rest of the house.
The main living room space has traditionally always been the more formal room in this house and they wanted to keep this. The current space, whilst has lovely high level ceilings and large georgian windows, it had surprising little other features to the space so the client wanted to add these back in. We added a more detailed ceiling which was previously plain with no ceiling rose(!?) and we wanted to ground the space and give it some sophistication by adding the wood panelled wall. To help keep things timeless and not old fashioned we combined it with a modern fireplace (the previous one was nothing particularly special, and quite plain), added lighting under the shelves and then mixed modern and antique furniture into the space. The result is a light timeless space that definitely will bring a level of sophistication to your chatter!
Exploring contrast, atmosphere and flow across two connected spaces, the formal living room that's light-filled, structured, and designed for gathering, leads into a cocooning snug. Much deeper in tone, layered in pattern, and intentionally more intimate. The layered red patterns, tonal variation, and depth of texture were carefully balanced to create warmth, intimacy, and a sense of quiet richness. It’s a place where everyone and curl up on the sofa by the fire and read a book or watch TV.
